Labour’s new leader Ed Miliband says he will be “on the side of the squeezed middle in our country”.

To many Labour Party members and the right wing press, this seems to mean loving up to top-rate taxpayers.

But as this graph shows, the real “middle” of society earn an average of between £19,000 and £24,000 a year.

And the highest point on the graph is around £250 a week, or £13,000 a year.

The number who earn even £50,000 a year is tiny—never mind the vanishingly small number of millionaires.
