Who voted Tories as best council?

West London’s Hammersmith & Fulham has been named Council of the Year by the Local Government Chronicle.

But the Tory council has been repeatedly criticised by trade unions for its attacks on the workforce and services.

Council leader Stephen Greenhalgh produced a policy paper that, according to the Unison union, “basically recommended that councils should only have to house the elderly or infirm.

“Everyone else would have to house themselves via the private sector.”

Judges for the award include a number of business figures and council bureaucrats.

But there is perhaps one surprise member—Dave Prentis, the general secretary of Unison.
