LAST YEAR some 15,000 people from Iraq fled to Britain and applied for asylum. At last count, only 700 had received refugee status. In early March the Home Office deported to Spain an Iraqi family that had come to this country in 1999.

I am sick and tired of the lies and half-truths told by the tabloids and politicians across the board about refugees. That is why I signed the Committee to Defend Asylum Seekers’ statement, ‘Stop the War on Asylum Seekers’. I am pleased that the executive council of my union, the FBU, has also unanimously endorsed it.

I strongly urge other trade unionists and campaigners against the current war and for human rights to do the same. The committee is looking to publish the statement in the Daily Mirror in the week prior to the local elections. I encourage union branches and the like to help the committee to reach its goal of £13,000 to pay for this advert.
