UCU union members took their campaign against the closure of regional Open University (OU) centres to management’s doors in Milton Keynes last week.
Despite written guarantees, the OU has closed the South East regional centre in East Grinstead with the loss of 40 jobs plus 24 relocations. Around 700 jobs would be lost were the OU to succeed in closing other English regional centres.
South East UCU rep Paula James says staff are angry at bosses willing to lose years of experience supporting OU students to move towards a centralised, call-centre approach.
