Care UK workers in Doncaster began a 14-day strike on Monday of this week. The leading NHS privatiser has launched a massive attack on workers with the introduction of new contracts last month.

Some workers are set lose up £7,000 a year. Care UK was awarded the contract for the care service for people with learning disabilities by Labour-run Doncaster Council last autumn.

The workers are members of the Unison union. They have already struck for 20 days in the previous nine weeks. Many workers have stood firm under pressure to sign up to the new contracts.

Now they are taking their fight out of Doncaster.

Unison rep Dave Honeybone told Socialist Worker, “We’re going to picket outside Care UK’s national headquarters in Colchester, Essex, on Wednesday this week.

“We’re putting a call out to trade unionists and supporters to come and join us. We also plan to target Care UK offices elsewhere and other places owned by their parent company Bridgepoint Capital.

“And we’re looking to hold another solidarity demonstration in Doncaster on Saturday 17 May. We are working with local council workers to organise this—we hope the national union will back it too.”

Their fight highlights the reality of Tory privatisation of the health service and the motives of the private firms taking control of chunks of it.

Join the picket on Wednesday 9 May, 9am, Connaught House, 850 The Crescent, Colchester Business Park, Essex, CO4 9QB.
