Benny Rothman should be mourned by every hill walker and climber in the country. In 1932 he led a mass trespass of ramblers onto the beautiful land of Kinder Scout.

Like many wild areas then, it was banned to working class people seeking recreation. Benny knew that change would only come through mass action by ordinary people. He was jailed for leading the Kinder trespass, but never stopped campaigning for the right of working class people to enjoy the land stolen by the rich. As a member of the Communist Party he was involved in the struggle for union rights.

He moved to Burnley to help organise the Moor Loom strike. He also led protests against Mosley’s fascists. His tireless enthusiasm in struggling for rights for workers was an inspiration to all.
