Bob Cox

It is with great sadness that we have to report the death of Bob Cox, after a protracted fight with cancer.

Bob was a longstanding member of the Socialist Workers Party. He spent the last 20 years in Bransgore on the edge of the New Forest. He was a tremendous comrade and central to Southampton SWP branch.

His contributions to meetings were based on a deep understanding of socialist theory and history, and an awful lot of experience from his time as a shop steward.

A reliable activist, even during his illness, his dry and healthily cynical sense of humour revealed a caring and committed anti-racist and revolutionary socialist.

Bob joined in 1978 when he was working in the power industry. He was based in north west London with his partner Ros Gardner, and their house became an unofficial organising hub for the party locally.

Perhaps Bob’s greatest contribution to the party and class was his unrivalled love of machines and gadgets.

Their home always had the most up-to-date machinery available, from printing presses to computers, to be used in the fight for a better world.

Their front room once housed an eight foot wide industrial scanning machine for printing.

As early as 1981 he had built his own computer and was translating Tony Cliff’s State Capitalism with Polish comrades at the height of the Solidarity movement.

In the early days of the internet, Bob created a website indexing the ISJ and Socialist Review, and an e-commerce website for Bookmarks bookshop, long before most commercial organisations had a website.

Every year at the Marxism Festival, Bob would commit all of his time to Bookmarks in order to produce recordings to help spread socialist ideas.

For those of us who knew and worked with him we have lost a warm and consistent comrade and friend.

Our class has lost one of its most committed and articulate fighters for socialism.

Bob will be greatly missed by all of his friends, family and comrades in Southampton and around the world.

Bob Cox’s funeral will take place on Thursday 18 December at Hinton Park Woodland Burial Ground, Wyndham Road, Walkford, Christchurch, Dorset BH23 7EJ. Please arrive at 2.45pm for 3pm. Bob’s family has requested that people do not dress in black and that there be family flowers only. Donations will be accepted at the funeral for local Macmillan Cancer Care.
