Israeli forces did so much damage to the Nasser hospital in southern Gaza last week, including mass arresting workers and patients, that it can no longer function. Israeli forces began a new raid on the hospital last Friday. They arrested over 20 people and cut electricity and water to the hospital. This led to the deaths of at least eight patients in the ICU due to a lack of oxygen supply.
Because generators had not been working for over three days, sewage started to flood the hospital rooms. The hospital also ran entirely out of food, water and baby formula. Last Sunday Ashraf al-Qudra from the Gaza ministry of health told Reuters news agency, “There are only four medical staffers currently caring for patients.”
Israel tried to justify its attack by stating that it had launched a “precise and limited mission” at the hospital in Khan Younis and said that Hamas was holding hostages there. The Israeli state is now trapping those left in the hospital inside and has set up checkpoints at all the entrances. As of Monday 200 patients, in desperate need of care, were still trapped inside the non-functioning hospital with even less staff to care for them.
Nassar hospital was the largest hospital still functioning in Gaza until last week. Since 7 October the Israeli state has attacked healthcare cities in Gaza more than 400 times. As of Tuesday of last week only 11 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza were even partially functioning. Israel’s genocidal intent has never been so clear.
Israel has continued its invasion of the West Bank. Last week Israeli forces ransacked the village of Umm Al Khair near Hebron. They arrested one of the residents of the village, Eidu.
He had told Socialist Worker back in November of last year, “Things were bad before the 7 October. The attacks by settlers didn’t start then, but they have got worse. The Israeli forces and settlers have blocked the roads. They have isolated us. They have stopped us from using the main highways.
On Monday Israeli forces bulldozed the land in the village of Husan, west of Bethlehem.
Husan village council chairman Jamal Sabateen said, “With military bulldozers they bulldozed citizens’ lands at the eastern entrance to the village, along the apartheid wall, over a length of 500 meters and a width of 20 meters, for the purpose of building a colonial road.”
However, the Israeli state has yet to crush resistance in the West Bank. The al-Aqsa brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement Fatah in al-Khalil in Hebron, announced that it had targeted the Karmei Tzur Israeli settlement. The al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, fought Israeli occupation forces in the Tulkarm refugee camp.
