Palestine campaigners in Hackney, east London, set up an encampment outside the town hall on Thursday evening to demand the Labour council breaks ties with the Israeli state.

“We’re here to demand an end to Hackney council’s complicity in Israeli apartheid and genocide,” one of those involved told Socialist Worker. “We have seen the student encampments spreading and we also want to escalate our action.

“The assault on Rafah brings home how urgent this is now—and we can’t stand aside or delay our solidarity.”

The latest research by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) shows that Hackney’s pension scheme invests heavily in companies that fuel or profit from apartheid Israel.

The blood money includes nearly £1 million in Raytheon, £2,741,000 in Barclays bank, £48,000 in Elbit and £392,000 in Northrop Grumman.

The encampment is calling on the council to divest from Israeli companies, break links with the administration of Haifa which it is presently twinned with, and to twin instead with Palestinian people.

Hackney PSC said to the council, “Be on the right side of history. Stand against Israeli apartheid as Hackney council stood against South African apartheid in the 1960s. End your £30 million of investments in Israel’s occupation.”

Meanwhile, PSC campaigners disrupted Barclays annual general meeting on Thursday in Glasgow to protest against its bankrolling of Israel’s genocidal assault on Palestinians in Gaza.

Barclays invests over £2 billion in, and provides financial services worth £6.1 billion, to companies supplying Israel with weapons.
