The Story Of Modern African Music

Monday 7 June, 9pm, Radio 1

DJ Edu kicks off the World Cup with a guide to the music of modern Africa.

Along the way he challenges the stereotypes, travelling off the beaten track and into the worlds of African rock and the various other sounds that are reverberating around the continent.

Contributors include Mos Def, Tony Allen, K’naan, Nigerian pop star D’banj and Sudanese rapper Emmanuel Jal.


Freedom Sounds 2010

Monday 7 June, 10pm, Radio 2

Legendary South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela revisits the story of the musical liberation of his country, and explores the role of music in the freedom struggle.

Over the series, Hugh introduces some of the unique styles and voices of South Africa.

He looks at the effect that apartheid had on South African musicians, as well as the response of international artists.


Football’s Freedom Fighters

Monday 7 June, 8pm, Radio 4

Fergal Keane travels to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was jailed under apartheid, to find out how a group of former prisoners used football in the fight for justice.

For freedom fighters Mark Shinners, Anthony Suze, Sedick Issacs, Lizo Sitoto and Sipho Tshabalala, the World Cup is the completion of a long journey that started in the 1960s.


Night Waves

Monday 7 to Friday 11 June, 9.15pm, Radio 3
