The London Film Festival is a great opportunity to see some exciting films from around the world. Most of these will not get a general release in Britain.

Here Socialist Worker picks out some of the highlights:

Babooska follows 20 year old performing artist Babooska as she helps to run her family’s circus, while the show travels through sleepy towns in Italy.

Esma’s Secret won the Golden Bear in this year’s Berlin Film Festival.

Directed by Jasmila Žbani, the film shows Esma, a single mother, and her 12 year old daughter Sara attempt to deal with the ongoing consequences of the Bosnian conflict.

The German film The Lives of Others is a remarkably assured first feature from writer-director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.

Set for the most part in East Berlin during the mid?1980s, the film chronicles the consequences of the minister of culture’s decision to investigate the lives of a successful playwright and his actress wife by means of surveillance.

The performances are superb.

The film succeeds both as an unusually convincing historical recreation and as an utterly compelling tale of individuals whose lives are shaped – tragically – by the society they live in.

The Ground Truth is a US documentary. Patricia Foulkrod draws on an incredible selection of material.

She details the dehumanising effect of the Iraq war, and asserts that there is neither the will nor the resources to deal with the trauma suffered by combatants.

Firsthand testimony is provided by a range of soldiers speaking about the sharp contrast between their expectations and reality.

It’s worth trying to get to some of these films if you are in London during this period.
