Mad Men is a fascinating look at the changing social and cultural face of the US in the 1960s through the prism of an advertising agency in New York.

The “ad men” are locked into a world of ruthless competition, greed and an obsession with appearances and consumerism.

Their lives appear on the surface to be idyllic. But this is for most a facade – as they are most often shown as being unfulfilled and frustrated.

The series highlights the backward attitudes of the time.

Most of the women workers are secretaries whom the ad men see as playthings.

But it also points to how these ideas were beginning to be challenged.
