Philip Glass’s opera is based on Mahatma Gandhi’s early life in South Africa during the Indian minority’s fight for civil rights.

This was when Gandhi developed the idea of “Satyagaha” – resistance to oppression by non‑violent means.

The repetitive patterns of Glass’s work are at some times laboured and monotonous. But at others times the opera works, with some beautiful solos and impressive choruses.

For anyone interested in a deeper exploration of Gandhi’s ideas, this opera will be a disappointment.

Gandhi’s role of leading passive resistance and the consequences of this for the Indian minority remain unmentioned and unexplored.

English National Opera Until 26 March
