Taking liberties is a new political documentary film that traces how civil rights in Britain have been systematically dismantled under ten years of New Labour.

It is currently touring the country with its director Chris Atkins for a series of advanced screenings. The filmmakers hope to build up a world-of-mouth buzz around the documentary which will help it secure a more general release.

Anti-war activist Damian King caught up with a recent screening of the film in Coventry. “I’d definitely recommend it,” he told Socialist Worker.

“It covers a lot of material about the anti-war movement, protests against arms companies, Brian Haw and so on.

“There’s an interview with one of the people acquitted over the so called ‘ricin plot’ – he is now under a control order and only allowed out of his house for six hours a week.

“They also interview some unexpected people such as David Bermingham, one of the ‘NatWest Three’ former bankers who have been extradited to the US.

“He makes the point that if they can do this to him, a rich white banker, they can do it to anyone.”

Director Chris Atkins says he wanted “to achieve only two things in this documentary – to make people laugh, and to make them angry.

“Politics is never usually a subject to exact either of these responses, but Tony Blair has given us everything you could want for a jaw dropping and hilarious film.”

The documentary’s release and advance screening campaign is timed to coincide with Blair’s departure from office. A book of the film written by Atkins and others will be released later this month.
