Selling council houses is also leading to closures of council housing offices, where tenants can go to pay their rent, seek advice and report any necessary repairs.
Kirklees council in West Yorkshire is run by the Liberal Democrats. They have decided to axe three housing centres. Their excuse is that the buildings do not meet the requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) and they cannot afford to make them accessible. But the DDA was introduced in 1995, so Kirklees council has had ample time to make the necessary alterations. The fact that they are not prepared to is an insult to the disabled. The result is that tenants have much further to travel for their housing needs.
