Bootleg Vol 2: From Memphis to Hollywood
Album by Johnny Cash, £17.99

This double album of largely unreleased tracks offers two sides of the angry man in black.

The first disc features the young pre-stardom Johnny Cash of the 1950s, as he records demos and radio appearances in the 1950s – complete with his contractual product endorsements for venetian blinds and garden fencing. The second disc shows us a different Cash, now signed to Columbia and relocated to Los Angeles in the 1960s as his popularity rocketed.

Bootleg Volume 2 sheds new light on the development of the artist who became known for his angry tirades against the US prison system, racism and the treatment of Native Americans.

Artist Tim Danby displays his paintings from Willesden Green and beyond, with images of work, homelessness and scenery. The exhibition also includes a selection of poster and banner designs created for the trade union and climate change movements.

25th BFI Lesbian and Gay Festival

This year’s BFI Lesbian and Gay Festival features 35 features alongside many more short films and events. Sadly, this anniversary event is shorter than previous years, hit by the government’s cuts to the arts – a reminder of just which sections of society are being hit by the Con-Dem regime.

Of Gods and Men
DVD, out 11 April

Of Gods and Men dramatises the real-life tragedy that saw seven monks in Algeria taken hostage and killed in mysterious circumstances in the mid-1990s. Running counter to the “war on terror” narrative of mindless Islamist terrorists, this is a nuanced testimony to the triumph of human solidarity over intolerance and fear.

Brighton Rock
DVD, £15.99, out now

The 1947 film of Graham Greene’s classic novel has been released on DVD. This classic film noir follows the life of gangster Pinkie and his pursuit of waitress Rose, a witness to one of his brutal crimes.
