The last issue of Socialist Review carried another story about the wars. I salute the commitment of those who have opposed these wars but I think there is no more headway to be made. The latest election results in Europe demonstrate this – the war in Afghanistan had no real impact on voting patterns.
At work and in my neighbourhood, the war in Afghanistan is not something the people really talk or care about. Even those who oppose the war are more upset about the Taliban and Islam than our role in the war.
This gets to the heart of something that has bothered me for a long time about the radical left – our tendency to be “against” things. We need to start being more positive and fight “for” our program.
With global warming and the crisis of capitalism, we have little time to loose.
