Shrinking our Pensions to Maximise Their Profits

This article is over 17 years, 6 months old
Public sector pensions are also under attack
Issue 287

The Walrus’s article on the pensions scandal and the 19 June demo (June SR) did not mention the planned attack on public sector pensions. Twenty unions, led by the NUT, are organising action against proposals to make us work five extra years to qualify for our pensions. This would mean retiring at 65 instead of 60 for a full pension and 60 instead of 55 for early retirement on a reduced pension.

Teachers are extremely angry at these proposals. Many cannot imagine working another few years, let alone until 65. We do not want schools staffed by exhausted teachers. Head teachers are also angry as they claim this will further demotivate teachers and worsen recruitment and retention. We will be marching on 19 June but we will also be pressing for industrial action if the government does not back down.
