US elections: We need “change”

This article is over 15 years, 10 months old
Gary Younge reminds us that Senator Barack Obama is not a radical; he is a realist (Feature, Socialist Review, July/August 2008).
Issue 328

The Obama campaign is not about race or “colour blindness”; it is about a new direction, and that is the “change”. The Obama campaign is a movement away from the oil, WMD and war profiteers. It is a movement towards social democracy.

Understand the battlefield: most Americans are conservative, yet they want to end the war in Iraq, find good jobs, raise corporate taxes and lower the cost of healthcare, homes, gasoline and retirement.

Once we have the “change” in leadership then we can adopt a more progressive agenda, establishing a progressive movement that Obama can turn to for support.

In its history the US government has toppled foreign governments for global dominance and fuelled the disintegration of the Middle East while giving paramount importance to Israel.

With a progressive movement, the Obama administration will “change” the direction of US foreign policy and create a climate of understanding between all peoples for a stable and prosperous world. The alternative, which is having Senator John McCain as president, will be nothing less than Hitler revisited.
