THE UNITE Against Fascism Manchester carnival came to Liverpool on Sunday 30 May. Despite Manchester police's best efforts to stop the event, and with only three days to build it, nearly 3,000 people turned up.

POSTAL WORKERS in several parts of Britain have been refusing to deliver BNP election material. Socialist Worker has received these letters supporting them.

THIS LOOKED like being a very important week for postal workers in south west England. We were coming under intense pressure to deliver election material for the British National Party. But many of us are totally opposed to handling their filth.

IN A magnificent response to the news that the Nazi BNP are to stand for election in 17 of the 22 council wards in Gateshead, anti-Nazi campaigners hit the streets en masse over the last week. Teams of campaigners have been out leafleting local estates and have organised campaigning stalls in Gateshead town centre on busy Saturday afternoons.

THE NAZI British National Party (BNP) is hoping to make a breakthrough in the European elections on 10 June. The BNP hopes to capitalise on the disillusionment with New Labour and a low turnout. But the forces exist that can stop the BNP. Unite Against Fascism has been drawing those forces together in unprecedented numbers to campaign against the Nazis.

Man y people in the anti-war and anti-capitalist movements agree with us on general principles. They agree that socialists must oppose all forms of oppression. They agree that any movement against capitalism must involve the initiative, energy and imagination of millions of organised workers. They agree we must unite the widest forces against the fascist BNP. They utterly oppose the Tory party and don't trust the Liberal Democrats. Mostly, they know the Labour Party offers no way forward.

UNITE AGAINST Fascism is the biggest anti-fascist movement in Britain since the 1970s. It has brought together anti-racist activists, the Muslim Council of Britain and socialists with youth clubs and musicians. Every trade union has signed up. Unite is planning to take the campaign to the next stage with five big festivals in areas that the Nazi BNP are targeting in the 10 June election (see below for details). The first of these took place in Sunderland on Monday of this week, with at least 8,000 people during the day. There will also be a national campaign of mass leafleting.

LONDON: Up to 3,000 people marched through London on the annual protest called by the Greater London TUC and backed by Globalise Resistance and other groups. The march brought together trade unionists, anti-capitalist protesters, pensioners, Turkish and Kurdish political activists, and students. Speakers at a rally in Trafalgar Square denounced the use of torture by the occupying armies in Iraq. Many spoke out against the fascist BNP. London Mayor Ken Livingstone said, \"Whoever you are planning to vote for on 10 June, make sure you use your vote against the BNP.\"

THE BRITISH National Party's attempt to hold a fundraising event with the French Nazi leader Jean-Marie Le Pen spectacularly backfired last Sunday. A campaign organised by Unite Against Fascism trashed any hope the BNP had of favourable press coverage for their \"respectable\" black-tie dinner with Le Pen.

THE FRENCH Nazi leader Le Pen was due to come to Birmingham on Sunday. The leader of the National Front organisation announced on his website this week that he was planning an \"official visit\" in England on Sunday. He was likely to be speaking at an £80 a head fundraising dinner for the British National Party (BNP) in the West Midlands.

"I WANT to express our very, very strong support for the new united campaign against the BNP. We are encouraging our activists to get involved." So said Brendan Barber, head of the TUC, at the press launch of Unite Against Fascism in London on Tuesday.
