CWU union members and other activists leafleted more than 50 Carphone Warehouse shops across Britain last week.

The dispute between postal workers in the CWU union and their Royal Mail bosses is becoming more bitter by the day. Strikes are set to take place across much of Britain over the next week.

Activists in the CWU union have organised a mass leafleting of the Carphone Warehouse store on Oxford Street, central London, for Saturday of this week.

Postal workers in the CWU union are stepping up their fight against Royal Mail’s programme of cuts and imposed changes to working conditions.

The attacks that postal workers are facing are being driven through by Royal Mail bosses who know they have the backing of the Labour government.

The CWU union is mobilising its members for mass action at Carphone Warehouse following the victimisation of CWU activists at its Wednesbury plant in the West Midlands.

Call centre workers from across Britain came together at a meeting at last month’s CWU conference. The meeting was unlike most others at the conference, with many of the participants far younger than the average delegate, and most at firms that do not recognise the union.

Business secretary Lord Mandelson’s plans to privatise Royal Mail are in tatters. But bosses at the company are determined to wreak revenge against those they believe are responsible for the calamity that has befallen them – postal workers and their CWU union.

When it came to preparing for this week’s three-day strike by postal workers in London, aggressive Royal Mail managers "did our job for us," says Micky Rowell, secretary of the CWU’s east London branch.

Delegates at the Connect communications union conference in Blackpool last week took a backwards step in support the union executives' proposals for a merger with Prospect and rejecting an offer to merge with the CWU that they had earlier backed. The whole weight of the union machine was used to force this through in the debate.
