Thousands of people remain on the streets of towns and cities in Egypt after a day of huge demonstrations calling for the downfall of the dictator Hosni Mubarak and his regime.

Mass protests took over the streets of Egypt yesterday—in Alexandria, Suez, the capital Cairo and other parts of the country.

A socialist from Tunisia who was present during the uprising which toppled dictator Ben Ali will speak. Professor Phil Marfleet, who has recently returned from Egypt, will talk about the situation across the Middle East.

Hossam Bahgat of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights said he was glued to the news from Tunisia.

The flotilla attack sparked protests and solidarity worldwide. Phil Marfleet reports on the growing Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which can offer a focus for solidarity with Gaza.

Israel’s attack on the Freedom Flotilla is having enormous political ramifications in the Middle East. The assault has exposed some of the social tensions in Egypt and Turkey, two key US allies.

Workers and campaigners protested in Cairo last Sunday demanding a rise in the minimum wage.

Around 2,000 Egyptian riot police have attacked members of the Viva Palestina aid convoy at the port of al-Arish – on the Egyptian side of the border with Gaza – after the convoy was refused entry to the crossing.

The Gaza-bound Viva Palestina convoy is now on route via Syria after the Egyptian government blocked it in Jordan.

Hundreds of mourners from all corners of the globe gathered in the late winter sun today to say farewell to Chris Harman, the editor of International Socialism journal and before that Socialist Worker. Chris died unexpectedly earlier this month while in Cairo in Egypt to address a socialist conference.
