Some 150 workers at Ealing hospital began a seven day strike today, Friday, to demand better pay.

Local government workers in Unison, GMB and Unite unions are furious at bosses’ failure to make a pay offer for this year.

Unison has given local government bosses until 1 April to respond to unions’ pay claim or they will begin a national branch consultation.

Around 60 striking GMB union members were camped out the front of Ealing Hospital on the first day of their second 48 hour strike yesterday, Wednesday. The strikers are porters, domestic, catering, and help desk workers employed by Compass Medirest. They are fighting for the London Living Wage and holiday pay, sick pay and unsocial hours pay. The action follows a 98 percent vote for strikes and a solid 48 hour strike last week. 

Pressure is growing on trade unions to fight for real wage increases. The Tories talk of a “recovery”.

Local government workers are organising a day of action over pay on Tuesday 4 February. The Unison, GMB and Unite unions are backing the action.

Several hundred construction workers in the Unite and GMB unions on Total’s Shetland Gas Plant have voted to strike. 

Some 600 workers in the GMB union at Bakkavor Pizza Harrow are balloting for strikes over pay.

Social work residential workers in Glasgow were considering plans for industrial action as Socialist Worker went to press.

Some 200 workers from the GMB, Unite and Prospect unions in Portsmouth dockyard held a march and rally on Saturday of last week to save shipbuilding in Portsmouth.

Cleaners at the College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London (Conel) have won a dramatic victory over wages.
