OVER 1,000 people attended the Socialist Workers Party convention in London on Sunday. It took place the day after the magnificent demonstration in London in solidarity with the Palestinians. That march underlined the central message from the convention-that the political situation has been radically transformed. Speakers who became active socialists in the late 1960s, when the last worldwide upsurge against capitalism took place, described how a similar international revolt was unfolding today.

TRAM DRIVERS in Croydon, south London, suspended strikes planned for this week after they forced management to offer a much improved pay rise. The drivers, members of the TGWU union, struck recently. That has led their bosses, part of the giant First Group corporation, to make an offer which would raise minimum pay above £20,000.

War criminal Henry Kissinger is planning to be wined and dined by corporate fat cats in London later this month. The campaign to protest against his visit is gathering pace and involving a wide variety of people. On Sunday of last week some 30 artists gathered to make banners and puppets that will show the murderer and his friends what we think of them.

The Socialist Workers Party (SWP) is encouraging every member who can to attend an unprecedented meeting in London this Sunday. It has booked the Palace Theatre, one of London's largest venues. "We've called a meeting for every member, rather than simply for delegates, so as many people as possible can debate and discuss the transformed political situation," says Socialist Workers Party national organiser Chris Bambery.

THOUSANDS OF people across Britain have taken to the streets to show their anger against Israel's military onslaught against Palestine. In London hundreds gathered outside the Israeli embassy, the US embassy and Downing Street nearly every day last week.

WE ARE building support across London for a yes vote in the forthcoming strike ballot over pay that will begin on Friday of next week. We could be out on strike on 14 May. There has already been a six to one vote in a consultative ballot by London council workers, who are members of the Unison union.

Socialists and trade unionists in Hull are saddened to hear of the death of Walt Cunningham, former chairman of the Hull Port Shop Stewards Committee and more recently a city councillor. Many readers will have heard of the Pentonville Five. These were London dockers whose jailing in 1972 sparked a near general strike.

Thousands marched through central London on Saturday as part of CND's "Don't Start Wars" protest. Many carried placards denouncing war with Iraq, while others carried Palestinian flags. Socialist Worker sellers petitioned demonstrators calling for justice for Palestine. Well over 800 copies of Socialist Worker were sold, with over 40 people joining the Socialist Workers Party.
