East London postal workers showed last week how to deal with managers who bully women workers. They struck in large numbers and forced a humiliating climbdown by the bosses. Up to 2,000 workers struck unofficially on Tuesday of last week in solidarity with workers on strike at South Woodford. At that office a woman worker had been reduced to tears by the verbal assault of a manager.

Over 1,000 people attended a marvellous meeting in east London last week to celebrate the fifth anniversary of The East London Communities Organisation (TELCO). TELCO is a coalition of faith, school and community organisations as well as trade union branches, working together for social justice. The meeting, entitled "Solidarity in action", was packed with a range of strikingly diverse people.

The movement against the war is spiralling. Even the mainstream media feels forced to reflect the growing opposition to Bush and Blair. Meetings and protests took place in cities and towns across Britain last week. All were focused on raising the anti-war banner locally, and mobilising single-mindedly for the mass national anti-war demonstration in London a week on Sunday.

I will be on the anti-war demonstration in London on 18 November, and I hope there are tens of thousands of others who will be as well. This is not just some routine march. I really feel that this is a crucial moment for all of us to do something about the war.

Over 5,000 people marched through London last Saturday in protest at the way the world trade system works against poor people and the environment. The demonstration was young-about half were under 30 and a significant number under 20. It was also very lively and angry. Sara Henderson, a 17 year old from Walthamstow in London, told Socialist Worker:

Software Giant Microsoft launched the latest version of its Windows software on 25 October. Sting played a special gig in New York to launch Windows XP. London's Royal Festival Hall was booked for the European launch. Behind the hype Windows XP highlights Microsoft's obscene rush for profits. Company founder Bill Gates is already worth £41 billion-over £6 for every person on the planet. His company reckons that Windows XP can increase that even further.

Postal workers across much of east London poured out in an angry unofficial strike on Tuesday. By midday workers at the giant EDO mail centre in Whitechapel, and at offices in Bethnal Green, Hackney, Homerton, Bow, Clapton, Poplar and elsewhere, were out in a brilliant act of solidarity with strikers at South Woodford.

"We made it as part of the Media Workers Against the War contribution to the anti-war camp. It's 25 minutes long and made up of interviews and footage of speeches such as at the first stop the war meeting of 2,000 people at Friends Meeting House in London. People who couldn't go to that meeting or who don't live in London can begin to get a sense of the Stop the War Coalition. The video outlines the basic arguments against the war-on humanitarian grounds, it's illegal, counterproductive and it is leading to a worsening of the situation."

Stop this slaughter NEW LABOUR is worried by the growing resistance to the war Britain and the US are waging on the people of Afghanistan. The government was shocked by the size of the 50,000-strong demonstration in London against the war.

"IT IS the paper's general policy not to cover marches." That was what the Guardian newspaper admitted this week, explaining why it hadn't covered the huge 50,000-strong protest against the war in London two weeks ago.

THE GUARDIAN newspaper has quite rightly come in for a lot of flak for its failure to report the great anti-war demonstration in London a fortnight ago. The paper has also been carrying articles that seek to play down the opposition to the war. "Students Shun 'Stop The War' Movement" was the headline of a piece that claimed students are too worried about money or having a good time to take a stand against the war.

THERE IS so much that a film that is set in Brixton, south London, could possibly explore. But South West Nine presents a picture of life that doesn't reflect the real experience of the area and consists of a range of cliches.
