The NUT teachers’ union has calculated a shocking figure that blows apart the government lies that public sector pensions are unaffordable.

A magnificent strike by NUT union members closed Langdon School in Newham, east London, for two days last week.

Teachers in the NUT union have wasted no time in building for strikes on 30 November.

More than 70 NUT union members struck at Langdon School in Newham on Thursday of last week.

I have been a socialist and active trade unionist all my adult life. As a local National Union of Teachers (NUT) officer it sometimes feels like we can be bogged down with case work, having to deal with bullying managers and teachers broken by the pressures of the job. However the last few weeks have been the most exciting of my working life.

The annual NUT union’s young teachers’ conference was the biggest yet—its capacity of 150 was oversubscribed. It showed unmistakeable signs that the union is renewing itself through its pensions campaign, with many newly qualified teachers already school union reps.

Teachers at the Islington Arts and Media School in north London were set to strike on Wednesday of this week. They are fighting compulsory redundancies. The NUT union members struck against the cuts last month. They backed strikes by 90 percent in a ballot.

Two Coventry schools struck against academies on Friday of last week. Some 70 teachers in the NUT and NASUWT unions were involved in the strike at Tile Hill Wood School – a huge majority – with a further 30 NUT members striking at Woodlands School.
