Some 40 education workers attended a meeting in Oldham on Monday of last week. It was organised by the local NUT teachers’ union branch to oppose plans to turn four schools into two academies.

Shrewsbury Sixth Form College More than 50 members of the NUT and other unions at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College held an angry protest on Tuesday of last week against the closure of the college’s adult learning section. This will lead to many highly skilled staff being made redundant or put on reduced hours 

Teachers strike against job cuts Members of the NUT teaching union at Mayville Primary School, east London, held a one-day strike on Thursday of last week.

Teachers in the NUT union at Elthorne Park high school in Ealing, west London, were due to walk out on strike on Thursday of this week against proposed pay cuts after negotiations broke down last week.

March in Whitehall A protest march on Whitehall against government education plans has been called by Ealing and Islington NUT teachers’ union branches, with the support of the Socialist Teachers Alliance, Islington Campaign Against Academies and many other activists.

History was made last week with the result of elections for national officers in the NUT. Tower Hamlets teacher and Socialist Teachers Alliance (STA) candidate Baljeet Ghale came first of two vice presidents, and will become the first black president of the NUT in 2007.

Furious members of the NUT teaching union at North Westminster School, west London, voted for strike action last week and won an immediate withdrawal of proposals to relocate them.

Some 30 supporters of Bristol Defend Asylum Seekers Campaign, Student Action for Refugees, Respect, Bristol NUT teachers’ union branch and other organisations protested outside Downing Street on Monday.

Terrific result in NUT election LEFT CANDIDATE Christine Blower has won the election for deputy general secretary of the largest teachers union in England and Wales, the NUT.

IT WOULD be a crying shame if the education unions were not involved in the joint strike action proposed for the end of March. The size and anger of a 250-strong teachers’ meeting on Wednesday of last week convinces me that there is the potential to build strikes in the NUT union. We can reach far into our unions with this campaign.

THE GENERAL secretary of the NUT teachers’ union, Steve Sinnott, was this week sending posters for the European Social Forum (ESF) into every school in England and Wales.
