NATIONAL LEADERS of over 90,000 civil servants in the PCS union met this week but postponed calling further action in the long-running pay dispute. The union will meet with management on Tuesday of next week. If there is no movement union leaders could call new strikes at a meeting on Thursday of next week.

RAGE AGAINST bullying managers swept through the civil service last week as hundreds of members of the PCS union walked out on unofficial strike action against victimisation. Their action came as the union leadership stepped up the dispute in the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), planning a new series of national strikes.

OVER 1,000 workers in Scotland and Lancashire walked out unofficially last week in response to management's suspension of PCS civil servants' union activists. Management also suspended four PCS members in Leeds on Monday of this week. Some 500 workers in two offices, Hume House and Park place, walked out. Eight offices in East London walked out unofficially on Tuesday of this week after managment suspended Nigel Prendergast, a union activist in Hackney. These activists refused to carry out staff appraisals under the Performance Development Scheme.

THE HIGHLY successful strike on Tuesday and Wednesday of last week by around 100,000 civil servants in the PCS union showed a real determination among members. People are not willing to give in to low pay and performance-related pay. Leaked documents last week showed how Kevin White, the human resources director at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), disgracefully criticised women staff for their supposed lack of ambition.

WORKERS AT the Health and Safety Executive, members of the PCS and Prospect unions, are continuing our campaign for a fair pay rise for all, with a work to rule and withdrawal of good will. This follows our successful one-day strike on 29 March.

Members of the PCS and Prospect unions, 40 percent of HSE's 4,000 staff, face a pay cut as management tries to squeeze down the maximum level of all pay bands. HSE management can afford to pay an inflation-based rise, maintain previous commitments on pay progression and stay within Treasury-imposed limits-but with top managers' bonuses based on reducing budgets they have a vested interest in reducing the pay bill dramatically.
