The executive of a key section of the PCS civil servants' union last week called off planned strikes over pay. Pressure was building from members this week for the strikes to be put back on

OVER 150 members of the PCS and Prospect civil servants' unions packed into a meeting at the HQ of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in London last week. Both unions are balloting for action over the 2003 pay offer after 90 percent voted to reject it. Feelings are running high as HSE management are determined to limit rises at the top of all pay bands to 0.5 percent per year for three years.

MEMBERS OF the socialist Left Unity group in the PCS civil servants' union are voting on who will be their candidate for the forthcoming election for the union's assistant general secretary.

A CRUCIAL battle is coming in the civil service. The results of the strike ballot in the PCS civil servants' union was due out shortly after Socialist Worker went to press.

Strikes planned over care and pay

CIVIL SERVANTS are gearing up for a major pay battle. More than 100,000 members of the PCS union are voting to take strike action over their appallingly low pay.

THE BIGGEST pay fight in the civil service for decades is on the cards. Some 89,000 PCS union members working in job centres and benefits offices, and in the Department of Work and Pensions, are due to begin a strike ballot at the start of January. The first two strike days are set for 29 and 30 January.

AROUND 100,000 civil servants in the PCS union are set to ballot to take strike action over their awful pay deal in January.

THE FIGHT for fair pay for civil and public servants stepped up a gear last week. PCS union reps and officials from across the country met to plan rallies in major towns and cities, coordinate future action and prepare a national pay claim for 2004.

MERSEYSIDE TUC organised a conference last Saturday to build a campaign against racism and fascism. Some 50 people attended the Merseyside Against Racism and Fascism foundation conference, including representatives of the PCS, Unison, Amicus and TGWU unions. Delegates agreed to launch the Merseyside Coalition Against Racism and Fascism to fight against the Nazi BNP in the area.
