She spoke to Socialist Worker about the upcoming elections to the union's national executive, which begin on Friday 6 June. The socialist Left Unity group and the PCS Democrats group are standing a united list in an attempt to defeat the right wing Moderates group that has dominated the union.

HUNDREDS OF Inland Revenue workers in the PCS civil servants' union unofficially walked out of their offices for 15 minutes on Friday of last week. The workers were protesting against the crisis caused by the government's new tax credit programme which left Britain's poorest families waiting for vital money.

SECTION ELECTIONS in the PCS civil servants' union have resulted in important gains for the left. The right wing lost control of the key inland revenue group and were almost wiped out in the Department of Work and Pensions.

THE CIVIL servants' PCS union launched a major campaign last Saturday to end low pay in the service. Over a quarter of civil servants earn less than £13,250 a year.

OVER 270,000 members of the PCS civil servants' union were to start a crucial vote over the future of their union from Friday this week. The vote is on whether to increase democracy in the PCS by having annual national executive elections and conferences.

ACTIVISTS IN the PCS civil servants' union are preparing for a key battle in their union. The union is set to ballot all its members in February about introducing annual national executive elections and conferences. If this is voted through it will massively increase democracy in the union. Socialist Mark Serwotka won the election for general secretary of the PCS in December 2000.

PICKETS WERE out in force at social security offices across central and north west London on Monday and Tuesday. Over 1,000 strikers in the PCS civil servants' union were defending union activists Chris Ford and Phil Henry.
