Sam Jay’s new Netflix special 3 In The Morning is refreshing in some ways. But there are too many jokes that leave you cold, says Jasmine Fischer 

Demonstrators in Senegal in West Africa have forced the president to retreat from a planned constitutional change that would have allowed him to have stayed in office for another term.

A film maker, novelist and radical from Senegal in West Africa, Ousmane Sembène consistently opposed imperialism. A few themes predominate in all his work – hatred for the brutal way capitalist and colonialist society makes people behave, sympathy for the poor and dispossessed, and identification with and empowerment of women.

Ousmane Sembène was born in 1923 in Senegal. At the time this was part of the colony of French West Africa.
