Flight Lieutenant Malcolm Kendall-Smith told a public meeting on Thursday that the crimes of the British and American governments may cause a "return to barbarism in the modern age" unless they change their foreign policy.  Speaking to a meeting of students in the build up to the demonstration at Labour Party conference, he said that "when you look into the history, the UK and US government have been engaged in criminal activity for many years."

Military families campaigning against the war in Iraq and Afghanistan are delighted to have won the right to set up a peace camp In Manchester's Peace Gardens, an area in the city centre that borders Albert Square, the assembly point for tomorrow's demonstration. The council had originally refused the families permission to hold a protest camp, but backed down at the last minute.

Students' feeder march Hundreds of young people took part in a students' feeder march to the Albert Square assembly point. Beginning with a couple of hundred, it grew to over 600 by the time it arrived. There were very large numbers from both Manchester University and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Thousands of anti-war protesters streamed into Albert Square in Manchester today at the start of the Stop the War Coalition's Time To Go demonstration on the eve of the Labour Party conference.

At least 50,000 people joined the Time to Go protest in Manchester today, the biggest event of its kind ever held in the city.
