Year six of the "war on terror" has produced warnings of war on Iran and plans for US military bases in Lebanon that threaten Syria and the Lebanese resistance.

The threat of war against Iran came one step closer this week when the US neocons announced they are "going to deal" with Iran.

George Galloway warned last week that plans to use United Nations (UN) troops to disarm Hizbollah and patrol the border with Syria will spell disaster and lead to more conflict.

"The Arab people now consider Hizbollah to be heroes because they are confronting the enemy Israel and protecting their land... Even if Hizbollah were destroyed, another Hizbollah would emerge within a year or two somewhere else - maybe in Jordan, in Syria, in Egypt or in Iraq."

"Condoleezza Rice is a liar. The US secretary of state blamed Iran and Syria for inciting violence over Danish caricatures of the prophet Mohammed.

If a writer was jailed for 30 years for exposing government corruption in Iran or Syria, there would be outrage in the US and Britain and demands for military strikes. But when that happens in Iraq there is silence.

The Bush administration had a couple of bits of good news recently, at a time when the picture facing it was generally pretty grim.

The US is beating the drums of war once more. This time it threatens action against Syria.

Iraqis in the city of Ramadi and neighbouring towns held a general strike last weekend in a protest against a blockade by US troops. The strike was called as US troops mounted a major offensive on villages and towns along the Euphrates river up to the border with Syria.

The US is attempting to interfere in Lebanon’s politics. The US has made no secret about its intentions for Lebanon, Syria and Palestine.
