Diana Mosley, who died last week, was a particularly unpleasant fossil. Fossils are relics of living things that tell us something about the past. Sometimes what they tell us is so deeply upsetting to the conventional wisdom that people make great efforts to hide it.

THE NAZI BNP won a council by-election in Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, on Thursday of last week. They disguised their most racist policies and concentrated on other issues, picking up 1,607 votes.

There is a myth that Benito Mussolini seized power after his March on Rome and the occupation of the city by his fascist shock troops. Fascist columns did assemble at four points near the city – but they were lightly armed, ill fed and left standing in the rain.

Nineteen year old Gavin Hopley died last week from injuries he received the previous weekend. He was beaten in Oldham, north west England. Police have arrested two men and are looking for others in connection with the killing.

The Nazis are convinced that they can win council seats in the local elections in May 2002. The No Place in Burnley for the BNP campaign was launched at a press conference last week in the run-up to the council by-elections set to take place on Thursday 22 November. A representative from Burnley Football Club signed up to the statement, as well as local trade unionists, Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors, clergy, residents, and a visitor to Burnley who was a refugee from Nazi Germany.
