Inside Bush's other 'rogue state'

15 March 2003
ONE IMPORTANT product of the worldwide anti-capitalist movement is that information is available as never before about events thousands of miles away. A new video, Un altro modo e' posibile...in Venezuela (Venezuela, another way is possible), is an excellent example of this.

Venezuela - a new defeat for the rich

22 February 2003
ONE OF Latin America's richest men, Gustavo Cisnero, was on holiday at his luxury villa in the Dominican Republic just over a week ago. His old friend, former US president George Bush Sr, was with him. But Cisnero could not have been happy.

Against a world of war and poverty

01 February 2003
TWO THINGS formed the background to last weekend's World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil. One was the threat of a devastating war against Iraq within weeks. The other was the swing to the left in Latin America, expressed in the victory of left wing candidates in presidential elections in Brazil and Ecuador, and in the failure of the coup attempt against Hugo Chavez's government in Venezuela.

Police gun down poor protesters

11 January 2003
THE CARACAS city police shot dead Oscar Gomez and Jairo Moran on Friday of last week. Their "crime" was to demonstrate in support of the elected government against an upper middle class mob trying to besiege the Venezuelan capital's military barracks.

Venezuela's rich play with fire

04 January 2003
CARACAS, the capital of Venezuela, is a city divided along class lines. It is divided between the rich east central area and the western inner city area, which merges into the shanty towns around the city. Today the division is political as well as economic.

Workers organise to halt right wing coup

21 December 2002
GEORGE BUSH'S US government openly threw itself behind attempts to overthrow President Hugo Chavez of Venezuela last weekend. As it did so the country drew close to civil war. The opposition has launched a campaign very similar to that which culminated in the overthrow of Salvador Allende in Chile 29 years ago.

Challenge to Chavez

14 December 2002
THE UPPER classes of Venezuela, in South America, last week launched another desperate attempt to overthrow the government of president Hugo Chavez. Their last attempt to do so, in April, ousted him from office for only three days before hundreds of thousands of poor people poured into the centre of the capital, Caracas, and forced the army to reinstate him.

Right prepares for new coup attempt

03 August 2002
THE ATMOSPHERE in Venezuela today is very much like what it must have been in Chile in the middle of 1973. That was when General Pinochet, backed by the US, organised a coup to crush a democratically elected left wing government.

Bush gang's smoking gun

27 April 2002
The US army helped the Venezuelan military to launch a coup against the country's democratically elected government earlier this month. A Mexican newspaper confirmed last week that US army officer James Rogers helped to lead the coup against the government of Hugo Chavez. The military operations were supported politically by a group of senior White House officials, all veterans of working with Latin American death squads in the 1980s.

Venezuela coup foiled by popular rising

20 April 2002
THE POOR of Venezuela defeated an attempted coup against the country's president, Hugo Chavez, last weekend. The attempt to remove Chavez was the work of the head of the employers' organisation, with the connivance of army generals, the head of the Catholic church, and even a corrupt trade union leader.
