London weighting

STRIKERS FROM a number of Unison union branches packed out a rally organised in Newham, east London, last week. It was to mark the second week of the latest phase of selective action to win improved London weighting for council workers. The Newham branch has come under attack from the New Labour council.

Stop the war

AROUND 350 people crowded into the friendship centre in Burnley on Thursday of last week to protest against an attack on Iraq and for freedom for Palestine. They heard George Galloway MP, Dr Siddiqui from the Muslim Parliament, John Rees from the Stop the War Coalition, Norma Wilson from CND, and Asad Rehman from the Newham Monitoring Project.

Newham I'm a road sweeper employed by an agency, and working at Newham council in east London. There are 120 of us, most on £4.80 an hour. We were told we had to go into work at the central depot at 10am. We normally start work at 7.30am.

Victory against Labour flagship COUNCIL WORKERS at New Labour's flagship council in Newham, east London, were celebrating a victory on Monday of this week. The victory came the day before the 2,500 workers were set to strike because the council had derecognised their Unison union. But on Monday the council backed down and signed an agreement to negotiate with the union.

Another private failure

ANOTHER flagship privatisation scheme has collapsed in chaos. Newham council in east London is to terminate its £35 million contract with private firm CSL to run the borough's housing benefit services. The council will bring the service back "in house".

Council workers

OVER 100 social workers in Newham, east London, will strike again next Monday. This latest 24-hour walkout is part of UNISON's campaign for fair and equal treatment for all social workers in the borough.
