Delegates to the EIS Scottish teachers’ union conference in Dundee last week voted unanimously to hold a ballot on industrial action to protest against cutbacks in education. Teachers have not struck in Scotland for 20 years.

Further education strikes in Edinburgh

Glasgow refugee protest

Over 1,000 people marched through Glasgow last Saturday demanding an end to the detention and deportation of asylum seekers. The Vucaj family from Kosovo were snatched and deported on Thursday of last week. The march was led by Scottish and refugee school students. There were banners from the Fire Brigades Union, the T&G union, the teachers’ EIS union and the Amicus union. MSPs spoke at the rally.

Scottish workers say no to racism Up to 1,000 people attended the Scottish TUC annual demonstration against racism and fascism in Glasgow last Saturday. Trade union delegates included firefighters, print workers and several Unison and EIS (Scottish teachers’ union) branches.

Scottish lecturers

OVER 1,000 college lecturers, teachers and other trade unionists marched through Glasgow last Saturday demanding the reinstatement of Jim O'Donovan. Jim is the president of the college lecturers' section of the EIS education union. He was sacked from Glasgow's Central College following a campaign of victimisation against union activists by the management.

On the march in Luton

Over 500 copies of Socialist Worker were sold on the "Save Vauxhall" demonstration in Luton on Saturday, while 20 people joined the Socialist Workers Party.14 papers were sold to striking Liverpool postal workers, while 5 papers were sold outside Vauxhall in Ellesmere Port. 6 papers were sold to striking lecturers at Coatbridge College and 13 were sold at a North Lanarkshire EIS union meeting.
