Bookmakers strike at Aintree

Members of the Usdaw union working at the bookmakers Ladbrokes call centre in Aintree held a second 24-hour strike last Sunday to protest against their below-inflation pay offer of 3 percent.

Anger at Usdaw conference

Delegates gathered at the Usdaw shop workers’ union conference in Blackpool last week. There was notable anger against Labour, especially around Gordon Brown’s removal of the 10p tax rate.

Co-operative insurance

Last week saw two days of strike action by over 2,000 Co-operative Insurance Society financial advisers, writes Geoff Brown. Around 500 attended a rally in Manchester journeying from as far afield as Aberdeen and Plymouth. The workers’ Usdaw union is maintaining the fight against changes to contracts that could mean earnings are reduced by up to 30 percent.

STRIKE ACTION by workers at Sainsbury's distribution depot in Haydock forced the company to increase its pay offer. The workers, members of the Usdaw union, voted to accept the deal which brings their pay up to £7.60 an hour, with shift allowances on top. The vote was 426 for the deal, and 218 against.

Unity message in north east

THOUSANDS OF people attended the biggest Durham Miners Gala in over a decade on Saturday of last week. The event was co-sponsored by the National Union of Mineworkers and the Unison union. It attracted the support of many other trade unions, including the RMT, Aslef and Usdaw.

SOME 80 trade unionists from Natfhe, Unison, PCS, FBU, Usdaw and Amicus marched with their banners in Manchester last Saturday. The march was over the bullying of staff at the Mancat college. One department with 20 posts has seen 35 pass through it in two years. The management made an unsuccessful attempt to dismiss the branch secretary last year. Now the college has declared compulsory redundancies in the trade union education unit, which includes a number of union branch activists.

Shop workers

MEMBERS OF the shop workers' Usdaw union showed anger towards the union's Blairite leadership at its annual conference in Blackpool last week. The leadership faced criticism after trying to put through a motion which would effectively give them control of the union without recourse to the membership. The motion was convincingly defeated.
