Discord with Tony Blair in Liverpool About 900 people heard Tony Benn speak at Liverpool's Philharmonic Theatre last week. Many in the audience voiced their discontent with New Labour, and attacked Tony Blair's love for fat cats and George W Bush. Socialist Alliance and anti-war leaflets were well received.

"This is not political – this is entertainment," said the man who refused my leaflet for the Stop the War demo. Then as if to confirm his point the tannoy system announced, "The Tony Benn show will start in five minutes."

OVER 100 people, including former MP Tony Benn, marched in London on Sunday in protest at sanctions on Iraq. The march ended at Downing Street, where a group of protesters camped down for a 72-hour vigil and fast. The protest was organised by campaigning groups Voices in the Wilderness UK, Act Together and Women in Black.

Councils

Hackney council workers in east London will end their next round of strikes with a rally whose line-up includes Tony Benn MP, Guardian journalist Gary Younge, Mark Serwotka, recently elected PCS general secretary and Jeremy Hardy. Strikes are planned for three days, 29-31 January, against the council's cuts and privatisation plans.
