Palestine

A moving film for Palestine

14 September 2002
PALESTINE IS Still The Issue, the new film by the journalist John Pilger, is a rarity on TV. It is a painfully honest documentary that refuses to toe the established political line.

Stop the war

07 September 2002
SOME 150 people from across the area around Halifax turned out to a public meeting of Calderdale Against the War on Wednesday of last week. They heard Alice Mahon MP, John Rees of the Stop the War Coalition, and local Labour councillor Mohammed Najib declare their opposition to war on Iraq and their support for Palestine.

Palestine

24 August 2002
OVER 200 people gathered outside Scotland's national football stadium, Hampden Park, in Glasgow on Friday of last week to protest at next month's under-21 football match between Scotland and Israel.

Jenin faces a new struggle for the truth

10 August 2002
REPORTS OF war crimes began circulating within days of Israeli tanks rolling into the Palestinian refugee camp of Jenin in April this year. There were dozens of eyewitness accounts of people buried alive as their homes were bulldozed, and of women and children shot dead in the streets. The friends and families of the victims had to wait for four months until the UN produced a report on events in Jenin. The report has serious weaknesses.

'Glowing' hope of resistance

03 August 2002
IN THE week before the bombing of Gaza City, a delegation of health workers, students and academics from Britain visited the West Bank and Gaza to show solidarity with the Palestinians. Nothing quite prepared our delegation for the everyday oppression. The bombing of civilians and children in Gaza was a consequence of the collective punishment Israel metes out to Palestinians in the Occupied Territories.

Letters

03 August 2002
Chilled to the bone by Israel's murder I HAVE just returned from Gaza City where I was part of a small delegation of trade unionists from Britain. We were there to show solidarity with the Palestinians and their struggle. It was the final visit of a week that had taken us all over the West Bank. I was shocked by what I saw.

US silent on Israeli terror

27 July 2002
SCARE STORIES about security weakness in the event of terrorist attacks regularly hit the headlines. But Bush and Blair stood by in silence while Israel launched a ruthless terrorist attack on the Palestinians on Monday of this week.

Palestine

20 July 2002
THE DEBATE at a Tower Hamlets council meeting in east London last week took an unusual turn. Campaigners took advantage of a little used procedure to table a motion calling for the council to officially "twin" with the Palestinian town of Jenin.

Palestine

13 July 2002
OVER 150 people packed the launch of the national petition for Palestine on Tuesday of last week, organised by the Campaign for Palestinian Rights. Jeremy Corbyn, the left wing Labour MP, chaired the event in the Houses of Parliament.

'Israel's war is a war on civilians'

13 July 2002
WE ARE going to help the US arm Israel. That was the message from the government this week. New Labour caused outrage by admitting it is bypassing its own arms embargo on Israel by selling military equipment via the US. Vital component parts for US F-16 fighter jets, which are used against the Palestinian people, are made in Britain.

'We won't bow to Bush's blackmail'

06 July 2002
THE KILLING of six Palestinian children, 700,000 Palestinians trapped in their homes, the assassination of Palestinian leaders, the rounding up of Palestinian men, the reoccupation of Palestinian land. This is what George Bush's vision for the Middle East means-Israel's freedom to do whatever the hell it wants to the Palestinians.

Bush backs Israeli murder

29 June 2002
THE US president George Bush's plan for "reform" in the Middle East announced this week will not bring about peace. He gave his complete backing to Israel and its brutal repression of the Palestinians. Right wing prime minister Ariel Sharon sent his troops and tanks to "indefinitely" reoccupy the main Palestinian areas in the West Bank in the days before Bush made his speech.

Palestine

22 June 2002
SOME 100 activists took part in a conference in Edinburgh on Saturday on "Giving effective solidarity to the Palestinians". John McAllion, Labour MSP, opened the conference by insisting that unity of all campaigners for Palestine was essential.

Terror under Israeli troops

15 June 2002
HERE IN Palestine the only things that are moving freely are tanks. Even ambulances can be held up at Israeli army checkpoints for hours while the patients they carry suffer in the sun. I am writing this in Nablus, a city which has been under curfew for four days now.

Stop the War Coalition

15 June 2002
EVERYONE WHO wants to organise against the war drive is invited to attend a Stop the War Coalition activists conference. Speakers include writer and broadcaster Tariq Ali and Jeremy Corbyn MP. There will be workshops on Iraq, Palestine, South Asia, Afghanistan, producing publicity and using the media, building local groups, fundraising and much more.

'The killing goes on in Palestine'

18 May 2002
"IT WASN'T a surprise to anyone, certainly not to the people of Jenin, that the United Nations fact-finding mission did not come to investigate. People had been told not to move anything until the team came, just in case valuable evidence disappeared into the trucks that carried away the rubble that was once their homes.

Five good reasons to march in London on Saturday

18 May 2002
THE MAIN party in Israel's ruling coalition has ruled out the creation of any state for the Palestinians, no matter how weak. The Likud party contains people even more ruthless and bloodthirsty than its leader, Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon. So much for "Israel's men of peace".

A day of international solidarity and socialism

11 May 2002
EDINBURGH: 1,000 people marched for international solidarity and socialism through the streets of Edinburgh to a rally in Princes Street Gardens on Saturday. Palestinian flags flew among trade union and socialist banners as the chants rang out against privatisation and for freedom for Palestine.

Palestine solidarity

11 May 2002
HUNDREDS OF people across Britain demonstrated in solidarity with the Palestinians over bank holiday weekend. The "Justice for Palestine-hands off Iraq" demonstration filled Sheffield city centre last Saturday. It was 2, 000-strong at its height, with lots of people joining in the march as it went along.

Watchdog with the deadly bite

11 May 2002
ONE OF the best accounts of the nature of the state of Israel is now back in print. It is available for a new generation of people angered by Israel's massacre of the Palestinians. Socialist Worker's pamphlet Israel: The Hijack State by Jewish socialist John Rose was first published in 1986.
