Donald Trump has announced the withdrawal of some of his federal forces from Minnesota. But Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) continues to kill and terrorise people across the United States.
On Monday morning, teacher Linda Davis was killed in Chatham County, Georgia after a car being chased by Ice slammed into hers.
The officers were attempting to capture Oscar Vasquez Lopez, believed to be an undocumented migrant from Guatemala. When he didn’t pull his vehicle over, they started a chase that led to his vehicle crashing into Linda’s.
Lopez has been handed all the blame for her death. He was arrested and charged with first-degree homicide by vehicle as well as reckless driving and driving without a valid license.
The Department of Homeland Security has also tried to slander left wing and liberal politicians for providing advice to migrants over Ice. It said, “This dangerous attempt to evade arrest comes after sanctuary politicians held webinars and provided resources and tips for how to openly defy Ice.”
Local police in Georgia have complained that they were not aware of the Ice activity in the area. And Chatham County Chairman Chester Ellis—the Democratic Party elected representative for the county—has condemned Ice’s use of a dangerous car chase to try to catch Lopez.
He said, “We have a no chase policy, and the no chase policy is to help protect our citizens more than it is anything else.
The Democrats have been forced to come out against some of the methods that Ice uses, but they don’t want to abolish the US deportation machine.
In Minnesota, Trump’s border tsar Tom Homan has praised Democratic governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey for cooperating with him, despite their differences.
Homan said that state prisons are colluding with immigration officers to share information about the migration status of prisoners. And he said that the regular cops are helping stop people from resisting Ice.
He said, “Mayor Frey and I will never agree on much, but you know what? His officers did respond to take down illegal roadblocks that made it unsafe for not only the citizens of Minnesota, but our officers,” said Homan
Hillary Clinton, the Democrat grande, boasted that her party was more efficient at deporting people than Trump at the weekend.
“More people were deported under my husband and Barack Obama without killing American citizens than were in the first Trump term or this first year of the second term,” she said.
Around 1,000 Ice troops have left Minnesota since Trump and Homan announced the end of Operation Metro Surge last Thursday. This still leaves up to 2,000 in the state.
And there are fears that Trump will ramp up the federal occupation in other parts of the US.
Ice has purchased a warehouse in the Detroit suburb of Romulus, Michigan that it plans to turn into a detention centre. The AFL-CIO union federation in Michigan has called for Ice to withdraw completely from Minnesota—and to get out and stay out of their state too.
Workers and their unions have shown they can start to beat back Ice in Minnesota. Now the resistance needs to spread to wherever the Ice operations go.
