Socialist Worker is delighted to learn that yet another royal scrounger is on the way.

Regular readers may be surprised at this apparent change of heart. But they will be the ones who haven’t yet grasped how progressive the whole thing is.

Take the Daily Mail headline, “Little girl who’ll give Britain its first classless sovereign” for example.

How can there be a classless monarch, you may ask. Don’t they snatch £180 million a year from us and live in free palaces? Well according to the Mail, Kate Middleton and prince William’s child will have “working class” ancestors as well as “blueblood” ones.

“In this new egalitarian age,” it goes on, “the House of Windsor bloodline will never be the same again.” So the baby will follow in that great royal tradition of sucking up the wealth that we create.

But if you think about it, it’s a victory for equality. And the baby could be a girl. So a woman could end up being the monarch. This is portrayed as an exciting new development that shows how liberated women are today.

But don’t we already have a female monarch? And hasn’t it been utterly irrelevant to the vast majority of women in Britain? Clearly many questions remain unanswered. But don’t let that stop you celebrating.
