The outcome of the UN climate talks at Copenhagen will be rises in carbon dioxide emissions. The draft texts provide a variety of ways for countries and companies to keep polluting.

Some countries could increase their emissions by over 50 percent – yet still meet official emissions targets.

Governments want to carry over billions of unused “carbon credits” to use in the next round of targets.

The drafts also enshrine carbon offsetting – allowing rich countries to invest in so-called “green” initiatives in poorer countries in return for credits that let them pollute.

Leaders of some poorer countries walked out against the West’s stitch-up at Copenhagen.

But all world leaders are using the talks to try and get the best deal for their own states – regardless of the impact on the planet.

The US has pledged $85 million over five years for a fund to develop clean energy technologies.

But Barack Obama has already bailed out General Motors to the tune of $62 billion. His climate pledge is a drop in the ocean. And the money may never materialise.

Governments don’t lack resources to tackle climate change. Their lack of action in the face of environmental destruction is an indictment of the system they uphold.
