Oil and gas giant BP revealed on Tuesday that it’s making more money than ever. As people worry about paying their fuel bills, the climate-killing company said profits had doubled to £7.1 billion from July to September this year.

War and spiralling costs for ordinary people have fattened profits. The big five oil companies globally have announced over £150 billion in profits so far in 2022.

But while the fossil fuel giants celebrate, the world is on the edge of disaster. Leading climate scientist professor Johan Rockström, said that the world was, “very close to irreversible changes… time is really running out very, very fast.” That’s the message that should be heard at Cop27, but those in power willfully ignore the threat.

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg has vowed she won’t attend this year’s climate conference in Egypt. She said that Cop conferences are “not really meant to change the whole system, but instead encourage gradual change.” Thunberg is right. The Cop conferences provide a guise while business as usual continues.

Helping to organise communications at Cop27 is US public relations firm Hill+Knowlton Strategies. Past clients of the firm include Shell, Chevron and ExxonMobil

We don’t need more warm words and vague plans for tiny changes at some point in the future. The Cop protests in Britain and globally on 12 November should be a place for rage against the system.
