The ruling class will drive us deeper into crisis, climate destruction, poverty and war in 2024 unless we stop them. Climate scientists have stressed, yet again, the existential threat to humanity that the climate catastrophe poses.

Johan Rockström, the joint director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, said extreme weather events in 2023 mean that “Earth is now in uncharted territory and under siege”. Last year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) had one message—act now, or it will be too late.

No warning was starker than 2023 being the hottest year on record. And 2024 could be even hotter and deadlier. Yet world leaders, as seen at the recent Cop28 climate conference, are in no rush to even attempt to fix this crisis. Instead they use all their powers to keep the fossil fuel industry alive.

The same capitalist system that relies on fossil fuels also pushes our leaders to pursue and back more and more imperialist wars. As the New Year began, the United States and Britain rallied for a wider war in the Middle East.

They continue their support for Israel as it massacres Palestinians in Gaza. But igniting war comes with contradictions for the ruling class. Joe Biden and Rishi Sunak’s support for Israel has been met with outrage and disgust by ordinary people. Even the biggest backers of Israel cannot ignore our outpouring of fury and solidarity.

With elections fast approaching in both the US and Britain, Biden and Sunak will be forced to consider whether their stance on the war will have cost them votes. The West is also faced with the conundrum of how to proceed with the war in Ukraine.

Withdrawing would mean an embarrassing defeat, but continuing a costly war that it is not likely to win will have long term repercussions. Ordinary people must utilise our rulers’ current weaknesses. The ruling class is caught in a bind—following its own agenda and risks causing more wrath.

We have to exploit this. And it’s further incentive to step up the anti-war movement, as well as the wider fight against the system and the chaos it causes. In 2023 millions of people suffered because of the barbarity of capitalism. But war, climate destruction, racism and inequality are not inevitable.

Instead of being divided, all those fighting back have to direct their anger at the real culprits—the bosses and the ruling class. This year, it’s time to turn that anger into a revolt that can topple the system before it’s too late. Fight for socialism in 2024.
