Home secretary Jacqui Smith has announced that ID cards are to become compulsory for “foreign nationals” – people in Britain from outside the European Union.

This is the latest sinister twist in New Labour’s battle to impose its ID card scheme on everyone in Britain. The government argues that ID cards can be used to fight terrorism, crime, illegal immigration and benefit fraud. But the causes of these are rooted in government policy and cannot be undone by forcing people to carry ID cards.

Now the government is trying to introduce the cards by stealth, focusing on minority groups it hopes will be seen as “acceptable targets”.

Nobody should be fooled by these tactics. The ID cards scheme is nothing but an expensive attack on our civil rights, whose sole purpose is to increase the power of the state over our lives.
