United States president Joe Biden and the Labour Party are under pressure over arms sales to Israel.

The Labour Party leaders’ call for a pause—not an end—to sending armaments to the genocidal regime follows in the footstep of the fears of US imperialism.

David Lammy, Labour’s shadow foreign secretary, said last Sunday that the British government should “join our American allies in suspending weapons or components that could be used in that Rafah offensive”.

Labour is once again the lapdog of the US president. Biden faces rising opposition to his pro-Israel policy, and he fears it could cost him the presidential election in November. But Labour’s cynical attempt to say it cares about Palestinian deaths is far too little and far too late.

The party doesn’t unmask the reality of Israel’s slaughter, it doesn’t break from support for the Zionist state. And it doesn’t point out that Hamas accepted a ceasefire deal last week but Israel refused it.

Any fractures at the top underline that the US Democrats and Labour can’t wholly ignore the rage on the streets, in the universities and in the workplaces.

We’ve frightened them, now let’s go further. We need a lot more resistance from below to force Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer to retreat from their support for Israel. And to win Palestinian freedom we need to overthrow them and their imperialist system.
