With the elections in Iraq behind them, warmongers in Britain and the US have been quick to declare once again, “mission accomplished”. Iraq, they say, should become a model for democracy across the Middle East.
Gordon Brown hailed the poll as sending the “clearest possible signal” that Iraq is well on the road to peace and prosperity.
But it is only by ignoring the most basic facts that anyone can arrive at this conclusion. Iraq is a humanitarian disaster of huge proportions.
Some 4.5 million Iraqis have been displaced since the western invasion in 2003. Between one and two million women have been made widows by the conflict. There are now five million orphans. And there have been approximately one million excess deaths.
Instead of crowing about their achievements in Iraq, Western rulers would do well to consider the destruction they have wrought.
