Almost every week the Tories unveil new repressive measures against protest. The sharpest ones are presently used against the Just Stop Oil (JSO) climate action group. A new high court injunction has banned JSO from demonstrating on the M25 for a year following protests on the motorway earlier this month.

JSO began two weeks of action in central London on Monday—and the right wing media are seething about it. The Daily Mail warned of the “chaos” the “eco mob” would bring. The Telegraph was upset after protesters “mocked police by walking slowly” on roads in west and central London to avoid injunctions.

Police have arrested more than 700 Just Stop Oil protesters since the campaign began in April. At least 27 activists are currently in prison or on remand. And the Public Order Bill is set to clamp down harder, filling the gaps left by the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act. “Locking on” and “intending to lock on” would become crimes, as would obstructing highways and infrastructure.

The new bill being rammed through parliament is currently at committee stage in the House of Lords. It won’t just be used to hit JSO. The Tories will use it to smash any protest they don’t like. The solution isn’t to accept our fate. The best way to resist the repression is to confront it now.
