Tommy Sheridan has accused Lothian and Borders police of mounting a “vendetta” against himself, his family and his political allies. It certainly seems that way.

Police arrested him for perjury following his 2006 libel victory against the News of the World. Nine officers raided the family home where the only occupants were Tommy’s wife Gail and their two and a half year old daughter.

So far £1 million and 40,000 hours of police time have been spent by Lothian and Borders police on this inquiry. Six others also been charged with perjury. There is no trial date set.

Many in the Scottish legal establishment – not natural supporters of Sheridan – have expressed concern that this case is stacking up to become a political show trial.
